Why Simple Controls are Often Better When Designing Keypads

Sometimes simpler is better. When you get into complicated, complex designs, particularly in keypad design, devices can actually become harder to use. Here at Si-Tech, we use the latest in technology, designs and materials to produce a superior product that meets all our clients’ unique needs. But we also recognize the importance of keeping those keypads as easy to use as possible.

Not only will this cut down on training time, it will also reduce confusion in critical moments as well as the risk for mistakes. Here are some reasons why simple controls are often better when it comes to designing keypads.

Complexity

This is one of the main complaints consumers have with their devices. Yes, modern electronics include many more features than they ever have before, but they have also become too complicated to reasonably use. This is why we believe in reducing complexity in keypads while also offering state of the art features and usability.

Standardized Layouts

For industries and clients that require mindless, rote tasks, such as data input and the like, standardized layouts for numeric keypads would be best to ensure they are able to use the keypad without even glancing at it. This increases productivity while reducing stress on the part of the user. Any other numeric keypad design demands a more active focus from the user, taking effort and time away from the task. Of course, this isn’t possible in all industries. Some clients will require a customized layout depending on the task or machine at hand.

Reduction in Buttons

With some devices having up to 250 buttons and beyond for one machine, keypad design can get quite cluttered. This could result in the user not being able to find the correct button when needed, the seriousness of which is compounded in life or death situations. The majority of buttons that appear on most keypads are simply not used on a regular basis.

Those extra buttons make it more difficult to use the devices due to confusion on the part of the user and the clutter they represent to the interface. When you reduce the total number of buttons, you make the silicone keypad more user-friendly. This doesn’t mean you have to eliminate certain buttons completely. There may come a time and place where you will need them.

But you can put them elsewhere on the device, further out of the way, or you could consider making some buttons pull “double-duty” through the use of a modifier switch. Perhaps you could control some functions through contextual keys or by using on-screen prompts.

There are many ways in which you can simplify your keypad design. Si-Tech is here to work with you on your specific needs and make sure the final product incorporates only the controls you need. Contact Si-Tech at 757-887-8488 to learn more.
