What it Means to Specialize in ITAR Compliant Components and Why it’s Important

The International Traffic in Arms Regulations, known for short as ITAR, refers to a set of government rules controlling the export and import of defense-related services, products and technologies listed on the U.S. Munitions List (USML). This collection of vital compliance requirements helps ensure defense technology and related technical information does not get into the wrong hands.

Here at Si-Tech, we specialize in ITAR compliant keypad components just in case. Sometimes, government and military clients hire us to manufacture their keyboards, and we would rather have this compliance behind us than be caught lacking in it. In our industry, ITAR certification goes hand in hand with compliance.

Any company that sells to the United States Department of Defense (DoD) must be ITAR compliant. Even if a company doesn’t sell directly to the DoD but sells to a company that does, it should be ITAR compliant.

So why is ITAR compliance so important? Here are three main reasons.

1. Following the Rules

Many foreign manufacturers aren’t registered with ITAR. If you use a sub-contractor that is non-compliant, you are breaking ITAR regulations. While custom silicone keypads are not expressly listed on the USML, they must meet ITAR requirements before exportation if they are components of USML systems. Following the rules means you can’t get in trouble. Simple as that!

Another word on sub-contractors: Despite the application intended for a silicone keypad, it’s important to ensure all subcontractors you use are ITAR compliant. Many smaller companies claim ignorance of ITAR because the government has not historically been aggressive about enforcing these rules. Now, though, the rules are being enforced more and more, bringing to light ITAR compliance for both large and small companies.

In fact, federal authorities have been drilling down into breaches of ITAR more vigorously. That’s why we have always ensured all parties we deal with are compliant.

Because we are an American-owned company, we can guarantee that our components are manufactured at our own plant in Virginia. If your company is ITAR compliant, why risk it by using foreign components that you are unsure of in regards to compliance?

2. Looking Ahead

Manufacturers often don’t realize they’re responsible for components AND the overall finished product. In their defense, ITAR regulations aren’t really clear on the subject. At Si-Tech, we take every precaution to ensure we meet all requirements throughout all stages of components development.

3. Additional Contract Possibilities

ITAR compliance is required in order to enter into many major contracts. Without it, you’re missing out on a big competitive advantage as well as an effective marketing strategy that assures quality. Because our partners trust our products completely, we enjoy repeat business for many clients, particularly in the defense and aeronautic industries.
