All About Color Matching

Color matching is important in the world of silicone keypad manufacturing. That’s why SiTECH goes above and beyond to precisely match the exact color for your custom product. Not only does this ensure uniformity and appearance of the finished product, it ensures no abnormalities or differences can be detected.

Did you know that we can, within 1 Delta-E, match colors for your custom silicone keypads? Basically this means we can match the silicone color or graphic artwork that has been applied to it. Delta-E (dE), in a nutshell, is the distance between two colors within numerical form. We hold our colors to the precision of 1.0 dE – the smallest differences in color that the human eye is able to spot sans help.

For anything smaller than 1.0 dE, a visual aid is necessary to make a differentiation. This is done with a spectrophotometer, an instrument that measures the printed rubber keypads’ color that you want.

There are two circumstances where this would come in handy:

  1. When you have an intricately detailed design in a clear molded silicone component or keypad or component, our team can use a laser for etching the graphic.
  2. When you specify a color request for your product whereby you want it to exactly match your logo, our team will create a prototype that you would first approve then send back to us prior to final manufacturing.

What is the Pantone Color Matching System?

Known for short as PMS, the Pantone Color Matching System represents our color standards. But it’s not just used by us. It happens to be a common standardized color system used all over the world by manufacturers.

What makes us unique is that we match colors that don’t even appear on the Pantone Color Matching System. We do this by measuring the color needed, then calculating a formula that we will use to create it by combining certain colors.

SiTECH goes by the Pantone Solid palette, which is comprised of 1,114 colors, each identified by a three- or four-digit number followed by one of three letters:

  • M: matte
  • C: coated
  • U: uncoated

We only match the “Coated” designation suffix because of the color difference between uncoated and coated stocks. Uncoated is more absorbent and can fall victim to “dot gain” which is when half-tone dots congregate between the original film and the surface. Slight variations in the color can be detected in the finished product.
